Successful Tattoo artists get to be creative at their jobs and make money at the same time. If you a natural artistic talent then this just might be the career for you.
Conventional wisdom dictates that in the past if you wanted to become a Tattoo artist then you would have to work for a couple of years as an apprentice - this usually meant sweeping the floors, taking phone messages booking appointments, sterilizing the Tattooists needles and then maybe just maybe spending some time on learning on how to Tattoo.
I remember one of my best friends for his apprenticeship: after the first year he was allowed to Tattoo on his own legs only (the skin is tighter on the legs than anywhere else so it is easier to hold the skin taut and get the ink in deep enough) Of course these days with the availability of Practice Tattoo skin this is definite not the case anymore.
The truth is these days with the amount of information available in instructional dvds and online video sites (Like Youtube) learning tattoo is now easier than ever - it is very possible to learn how to set you machines up, all the different sterilization requirements and even the correct way to give a tattoo just by studying from home. Of course there are the old school guys who say "that's not the way we did it in my day" but then again the real old school guys had to make their own needles everyday (before you could buy pre-made needles) and you don't see these guys making their own needles do you?
A lot of the old school shop owners also look their nose down at people who start by using a Tattoo kit but the truth is these days there are an awful lot of professional artists who got their start this way and esp with the availability of good quality kits under $200 there is no longer a reason not to.
One of their grievances is the fact that there is a risk of spreading blood borne diseases (Hepatitis, HIV etc) by using dirty needles and tubes however most people these days are intelligent enough to know of the risks and the safety steps one must take. With the cost of pre-made tubes and needles these days being so cheap there is no excuse for anyone to reuse old needles anymore even when starting out
The bottom line with everything in life is that it takes a lot of experience to get good at something - the sooner you start and the more experience you get in sketching drawing and real world tattoo experience using practice skin the better you are going to be
